Academic Year 2012-13...

While undertaking my HND in Art & Design, my work focused on  coast - Sicily, Spain and more particularly, Ayrshire, where I live. I  hope that my work conveys the beauty of the natural world, the power of the sea and the attraction that we, as an island nation, have for the coast, the beach and the variety of weather that they provide.

I have also been keeping up with my patio painting and embroidery.

Academic year 2013-14 my focus changed slightly

I looked more generally at the Ayrshire and Galloway landscape, coming inland to look at our woodland, hills and wildlife.

Because of the Commonwealth Games, I was also tempted into the Glasgow city landscape to see what that had to offer.

Exhibitions I have visited and recommend

I've always loved going to art galleries. The MacLaurin Gallery at Roselle in Ayr, The Harbour Ats Centre in Irvine and the Dick Institute in Kilmarnock are favourites in the local area. The MacLaurin currently has a room to showcase local artists - 3 different ones each month. Do drop in to have a look. I shall be there next February!

in the summer of 2013 I was lucky enough to visit the Venice Biennale art festival again. As always, it was stunning. there is such a variety of different pieces to see. The 3D work this year was astonishing. Needless to say, Venice has crept into my work this year, too.

Open Weekend at The Courtyard Studios, Irvine

I was really lucky to be able to visit the studios again this month  and talk to the artists who work there. Their work was really impressive and they, as people and practising artists, were still inspirational. It was good to meet up with artists I had written about for my personal investigation last year at college.

PRINT-MAKING

I have been attending a Moku Hanga print-making class in autumn 2013 at the House for an Art Lover at Bellahouston Park in Glasgow. It was a super course attended by lots of intersting people. The tutor was first class and we were able to produce lots of different prints in multiple colours.

GETTING READY TO BE A PRACTISING ARTIST

In order to ensure our dining room and conservatory are used for the purposes intended, we converted a bedroom into  a studio space for me in Easter 2013. It's fabulous to have the room to leave up my easel and the storage space for all my things just where I need them. Let's hope the space continues to inspire me to create some good pieces.

OPEN STUDIOS AYRSHIRE

In 2013 I joined  Open Studios Ayrshire and had great fun exhibiting at the Open Studios weekend in April. It was hard work preparing for that and keeping up with college work - but it was worth it. I met so many lovely people.  Although I joined again last year, I did not exhibit as we had just acquired a puppy which did not allow for a lot of artwork being created! However, I am currently trying to create a selection of work to show this spring.  Do have a look at the website [link below] to find out more about the association.

Venetian Images

The Biennale festival in Venice did provide some food for thought - and some inspiration to try more architectural pieces. The fabulous figurative works in the exhibitions just had to be incorporated, however, and so I have attempted a combination of the two styles within my work. LIFE-DRAWING CLASS

Once I had finished the print-making class, I ventured back up to the House for an Art Lover to take on a life-drawing class. It's a 6-week course, with two more sessions to go. It's been really good with just 5-6 of us in the class, a super tutor and a great model. To date, we've used pencil, graphite stick, coloured pencil, charcoal, ink, acrylic paint and are working on watercolour this week. When the course is finished I'll post some of the better pieces in the new work section.

LANDSCAPES FLORA AND FAUNA

A visit to Dean Castle in Kilmarnock has provided material for three pieces so far: trees with sunlight filtereing through, and two versions of clumps of toadstools. I think there is more to be worked from this as there were some lovely reflections in  the water as well as the fabulours autumn colours of last month. I've put in 3 pieces in the new work section.

GETTING READY TO EXHIBIT

In February 2014 I was invited to show a selection of work at the Maclaurin Gallery's Artists' Showcase at Roselle in Ayr. Each month 3 artists are asked to show up to six pieces of work in the area set aside for the showcase. I thought the selection I chose was quite diverse.

THE NEW ARRIVAL

Isn't it strange what a difference a little bundle of fluff can make to your life? Mischa came into our life in April 2014, putting artwork on the back burner - apart from animal photography!! She's cute in all senses of the word.
